The Morning Toy is an original, handmade 3D sculpture by John DeFaro for Green Religion. Created to be held, moved and contemplated, it turns an encounter with form and texture into a moment of play, pause and participation.
First created in 2023, the sculpture begins with a cork ball and a pine curtain ring, familiar materials from domestic life. We encounter cork in bottle stoppers, coasters and other quiet places around the home. Yet cork is tree bark, light, resilient and buoyant, connecting the interior back to trees and the canopy.
Its green extends from DeFaro’s connection to Daoist thought and the understanding that human life is not separate from Earth. Green Religion grows from this same recognition through participation in and for the living world. That living world includes us.
The rounded forms are joined and transformed through five or more layers of acrylic art paint. A raised floral texture is hand-formed across the upper half of the cork ball, while the lower half remains exposed and honest about what it is.
The Morning Toy can be turned, spun, floated and observed. Its rounded body and elevated texture create a changing experience within the hand.
In a world filled with objects and words promising to help us feel better, The Morning Toy offers something quieter. Made entirely by hand, for now, it cuts gently through the daily rotation of fads and returns attention to touch, motion and what is already here.
Part miniature sculpture, part meditation object and more curious than a stress ball, it does not demand attention. It politely invites it.
Also envisioned at human scale for public space, its present meaning comes partly from remaining not so big in a big-minded world. Small enough to hold, it makes participation personal and becomes a gentle expression of AWEARness.
